MALANQUIN GOLF COURSE
Malanquin Golf Course is an 18 hole golf course with a clubhouse, pro shop, restaurant/bar, and locker rooms. Malanquin is open to non-members and is full service with carts, driving ranges and caddies.
The club house is not spectacular but a new restaurant and bar are being built now (February 2020). You will be matched up with a caddie who speaks English and who will give you some tips about the course.
The par 72 course has some hills and water features and sand traps so it is slightly challenging to experienced golfers. The First Nine has wide fairways with trees and hills. The Back Nine is more challenging with tighter fairways, more water to avoid, and sand traps just before the fast greens.
The tee box choice yardage is 7206; 6410; 5591 and the women’s tee box yardage is 4962. The cart paths are well maintained and the club facilities include tennis courts; fitness center and Olympic size pool.
You can play 18 holes for under $70 US including cart and caddie and you can rent clubs for a reasonable price. The course is open from 7:00 am to sundown.
Dress code—NO SHORTS or JEANS. Shirt must have a collar. You can show up and play.
LAS VENTANAS GOLF CLUB
Las Ventanas is San Miguel’s newest and most expensive golf course, breaking the $150 barrier per person on weekends with the required caddy. Now all 18 holes are playable on a course designed by Nick Faldo.
Las Ventanas has some nice views in the distance, including the church towers of the historic center five minutes away by car. In other directions you can see mountains, a lake, and the many water features on this course. New homes surround many of the fairways—with some lots still available.
This par 70 course is more challenging than it looks at first thanks to tricky slopes,
difficult water and sand obstacles to avoid, and inconsistent greens that are not always easy to read. It may take a few rounds before you can really read the course, so take advantage of the caddies who are willing to help you gauge.
Some of the houses are near the fairways, so you need to drive accurately off the tees, which range from 5267 (red tees) to 7141 yards. Many fairways are wide and there aren’t a lot of tree obstacles on this newer course. Although still under construction, the main building when completed will be spacious, including a ballroom filled with natural light.
Already in use is a full bar and indoor/outdoor restaurant with the best pro shop of the three courses.
San Miguel has a reputation for good restaurants and Mon Bistro measures up.
You can also have breakfast here before hitting the course. Wines by the glass and local craft beers.
Tee times are from 8:00 am to 3:00 or 4:00; the restaurant and bar stay open late. The course is open to the public, but members get priority on tee times, so best to reserve in advance. Best value is Monday or Tuesday when green fees are 2 for $120. Guests of members get reduced rates. Dress in slacks and collared shirt.
PAR 3 at ZIRANDARO GOLF
To work on your short game or just have fun on the golf course, head to Zirandaro Campo de Golf on the outskirts of town which has impressive mountain views.
Prices to play golf here are a la carte. To play 9 holes is 700 pesos including the cart for roughly $37 US. To play 18 holes is roughly $53. No required caddies and you can rent clubs for less than $12.
